Background of the Study
SMS language in Abuja represents a significant departure from standard linguistic norms, characterized by abbreviated forms, truncated syntax, and innovative punctuation. This study investigates the syntactic efficiency of Nigerian SMS language, focusing on how text messaging practices affect sentence construction and communication clarity. The brevity imposed by character limits has led to creative syntactic solutions, such as the omission of function words and the use of symbols to represent phrases (Chukwu, 2023). These adaptations are essential for rapid communication and often serve to convey meaning efficiently in digital contexts. The research examines a corpus of text messages collected from diverse demographic groups in Abuja, analyzing how syntactic patterns evolve in the face of digital constraints. The study also explores the relationship between syntactic efficiency and user comprehension, considering factors such as age, education, and exposure to formal language instruction (Adeola, 2024). By combining quantitative analysis of text message corpora with qualitative user interviews, the study aims to shed light on the evolving nature of SMS language and its broader implications for literacy and digital communication practices (Ibrahim, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the widespread use of SMS language in Abuja, there is limited research on its syntactic efficiency and the implications for effective communication. The abbreviated and often non-standard syntax of text messaging may compromise clarity and lead to miscommunication, particularly among users with varying levels of language proficiency (Chukwu, 2023). This gap in research poses challenges for educators and policymakers seeking to understand the impact of digital communication on language standards (Adeola, 2024). Without a systematic analysis of syntactic patterns in SMS language, it is difficult to develop strategies to bridge the gap between informal digital language and formal language norms. This study addresses these issues by providing an in-depth investigation of syntactic efficiency in SMS, aiming to inform future educational interventions (Ibrahim, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to SMS language in Abuja and does not consider other forms of digital communication or regional variations beyond the selected demographic.
